Darlington Farmers Auction Mart held their weekly sale of cast cattle, store and breeding stock on Monday 11th December 2023. Forward were 291 and 1258 sheep.

Cast Cattle – The sharp trade continued as today’s offering averaged a pleasing 172ppk and £1134 per head. Top per kilo at 266 pence was a fabulous four-year-old Limousin cow from R W Ridley, Tongue Hill, Hurst; three Limousin OTM heifers followed between 250ppk and 260ppk with twenty cattle in total surpassing 200ppk. Top gross valued female was a wonderful 896kg pure Limousin cow from J E Jordon & Son, The Brocks, Morpeth when she sold for £2024, behind her came a well-fed Limousin from D K Barker, Little Ketton at £1844 and a shapely British Blue from G W Dent at £1744. Top native breed of the day was an excellent Aberdeen Angus steer from J H & C Oulton Ltd, Newlands Hall when he sold for 258ppk and £1684 whilst Shorthorn OTM steers topped at 238ppk and £1520 from G A Rogerson & Son, Thistleton Farm. Native bred cows topped at 186ppk from D A & M A M Brown, Agglethorpe Hall and £1481 from R Bradley & Son, North Crane Row; both vendors with Aberdeen Angus. Friesian trade peaked for an OTM steer from G Bolton, Pea F;latts Farm at 220ppk with cows to £1286 from J & G Clark, Fleetshot Farm. Last but by no means least comes news of a terrific six-year-old Limousin stock bull from A & R Thompson, Dimmingdale Farm which led the way today selling for 206ppk and £2146.

Breeding Cattle – An impressive herd reduction from D & J Gawthorpe, Meadow Nook Farm, Denby Dale preceded today’s store cattle sale and found trade buoyant. A tidy seven-year-old British Blue cow with a heifer calf at foot topped proceedings at £2400 selling to T W Dinning, Northumberland. Hereford and Limousin in calf cows sold to £1320 with whilst a pair of in calf Hereford heifers impressed selling for £1620 and £1380.

Store Cattle – The super sharp store trade bounds on relentlessly as the excellent returns for finished beef continue to galvanise the buyers. An increased show of young bulls found plenty of enthusiasm and topped twice at £1220; both the sale leaders were just ten months old as a Charolais from E Parsons, Newstead Farm shared the spoils with a Stabiliser from D L Brown, South View. A good day for M Robinson & Sons of Staindrop as they dominated the top price columns in the clean store cattle; heifers sold to £2030 for a 31-month-old British Blue cross with 2-year-old Limousins checking in at £2000 and £1880. The same home also went on to top the steers selling an excellent 30-month-old Limousin for £1600 with G W & L Marsay, Manor Farm closest behind in the steers at £1580.

Store Sheep – A plainer show forward and trade a shade easier as many of the root crops sit saturated after the recent flooding. Six superb Texel lambs from K Mitchelson, Dene House Farm stole a march on the rest of the field when they rightly topped the sale at £135. A single Beltex lamb was next best, selling to £127 from F Kearton, Thackholme with N Gill of Moory Lea Farm following with Texel crosses at £115. Pick of the Mule lambs were half a dozen short keep sorts from T E Dobson, Unthank Farm at £99. Feeding ewes topped at £91 for a strong pen of forty Aberfield’s.
