Darlington Farmers Auction Mart held their weekly sale of cast cattle, store and breeding stock and their fortnightly sale of rearing calves on Monday 7th September 2026. Forward were 205 cattle, 1445 sheep and 57 calves.

Cast Cattle – Trade upkept recent levels, fleshy cows likely a touch dearer and feeding cows arguably a penny or two less, all in all, very similar on the week. Top per kilo at 382 pence was a smart OTM Limousin heifer from D & PH Brown, Cordilleras Farm. Top of the cows per kilo at 338 pence was a shapely British Blue from GC & KJ White & Son, Rigg Farm, five others passing 300ppk included two Hereford’s from AP Taylor, Ox Close plus a Limousin from S & J Dent & Son and two thumping cows from R Leiper & Co, Bygate, Ponteland. The excellent Leiper cows grabbed the top two gross values this week, a 939lg Charollais led the way at £2817 with her companion, an 894kg Aberdeen Angus next in line at £2646. Native breeds were plentiful and included a fleshy run of Highlanders from W Young, Cliff House Farm which topped at 268ppk and £1353 whilst the Friesian cows were led at 226ppk and £1577 by G Thompson & Sons, Softley Farm.

Store Cattle – The momentum remains on the side of the seller in the store ring; trade continues its fine summer form as we head in to the autumn months. A trio of excellent steers from RG Richardson, East Farm, Burdon deservedly bagged the top spots, a 22-month-old Aberdeen Angus sold for £2580 and two tidy 16/17-month-old Limousin’s followed at £2460 and £2380. Some super dairy crossed Aberdeen Angus steers from Codlaw Farms, Wall, Hexham impressed with a top two at £2120 and heading the heifer prices were E Parsons, Newstead Farm with a Charollais at £1980. Two vendors followed on the heifer list just £10 adrift of the topper; a 16-month-old Limousin from S & A Greaves, Standing Stones and a 15-month-old Simmental from AE Barker, Whinfell Road. Earlier in the day a 13-year-old British Blue cow with a Limousin calf at foot from W Love Ltd, Sandy Carr sold for £1950 and young bulls topped at £1600 from AJ Marr & Son, Old Ravensworth.

Breeding Sheep – A fine flock dispersal from the Burns family of Lodge Farm, Upper Broughton, Leicestershire were in attendance today, plenty of ringside interest ensured that the excellent sheep achieved some very pleasing results. Super Texel shearlings twice sold to £390, others followed at £365, £340, £335 and £330. The Texel ewes were impressive and rewarded with a very sharp trade as pens twice reached the £290’s with others often in the £260’s, £270’s and £280’s. Lleyn shearlings sold at £305 and the Lleyn ewes at £285 whilst a couple of pens of Romney shearlings sold at £235 apiece. Thanks to Dave and Oli Burns for their support over recent years and for today entrusting us with the dispersal of this excellent flock of ewes.

Store Sheep – A monumental trade in the store lambs, a relatively plain show in comparison to recent weeks averaged £117.01, definitely the dearest we have seen so far this season. Six sensational Beltex lambs from MR Cass, Beacon Farm topped the day at £173, the same good home followed with others either side of £150 as their terrific trailer load of 45 lambs averaged £146.51. The trade has lifted with the recent rain, strong lambs now all £130 and beyond, tidy running lambs £110 to £130 and really only the tups and the tiddlers can be bought under £100.
Feeding ewes continue to come forward in numbers and all classes remain in very good fettle indeed. The whole sale averaged £130, plenty of Mule, Horned and minority breeds included in that figure. A terrific trio of Texel ewes from C Moffett, Backandsides Farm set the bar when they sold for £254 each. A lean show of Mule ewes could arguably be the best things to sell, averaging £120 to a top of £143. Horned ewes anywhere from £40 to £100 just dependant on cover, tups to £202 for a strong Suffolk from WI Suddes & Son, South Farm.

Top price today goes to CN Bentley, The Gables with a terrific British Blue bull making £740. Simmental bulls from JT Forster & Son, Killerby Farm, sold to £590 whilst the same home reached £600 with a Simmental heifer. RW Raper & Sons, High Mulberry, sold a Limousin bull at £590. Hereford bulls from Deerness Valley Dairy, High Hedley Hope, sold to £570, whilst the same home topped the Hereford heifers at £560. Angus bulls from L James, Sycamore Hill, reached £570, whilst JL Miles & Sons, Little Bridge, made £560 with Angus Heifers. Dairy bred bull calves topped at £600 from CN Bentley, The gables, with a Fleckvieh and £420 with a Friesian.
