Junior Handlers ‘Super Single’ Show and Sale of Prime Lambs
A wonderful day as the next generation did themselves and their families extremely proud in Darlington, 29 budding entrepreneurs with 39 lambs spread over 4 classes excelled throughout on a day when genuinely everyone came out a winner. First and foremost immense thanks must go to our sponsors who between them helped us accumulate a magnificent prize fund of £750; main sponsors Coxhoe Service & Supply were accompanied by great generosity from Dots Café, Vickers and Barrass, Brash Weighing Equipment, H H Smith & Son Livestock Haulage, R Gilson Agricultural & Groundwork, John Warren ABP, Carrs Billington Barnard Castle, The Farmers Mart, Swale Veterinary Richmond, J W Thompson International Haulage, J Wilkinson West Side Farm.

The judging was kindly carried out by Jack Iveson of Atkinson Livestock, thanks go to Jack from all at DFAM for a truly professional and thorough job.

With classes open to all under 18’s competition was hot with quality high, a remarkable achievement indeed then for 3 year old Seth Whitfield of High Castledene who held them all off and scooped the trophy and tri coloured rosette with his perfect Beltex crossed lamb; with stiff competition and wonderful support shown by butchers, farm shops and catering wholesalers from across the North of England the eventual successful bid came from tremendous DFAM supporter Mr Ali Shan of Yorkshire Halal Meat Suppliers, Keighley. A great day for Katie Walton of The Meadows culminated in her winning the reserve championship, at the grand old age of 5 Katie produced a trio of top quality lambs on the day which were all in the prizes as another of the next generation certainly impressed the gathered crowd. The special prize for showmanship this year went to 10 year old Lexi Beeforth of High Crookleith Farm as she handled her Beltex lamb with great guile and maturity whilst the best turned out also went to a Beltex as Harry Askwith of Middle Mown Meadows narrowly edged out a host of deliciously dressed lambs.

Prime Bulls (91) – Trade easier as the case seems to be nationally however certainly not disastrous with an overall average of 220 pence per kilo. Another shining light from the superb Renton Highlaws lorry this week as they led the price per kilo race at an impressive 259 pence with their homebred 725kg Limousin; a dominant performance from the renowned Morpeth based feeders as they showed the top 5 prices per kilo on the day. Leading the gross values this week was a beautifully finished British Blue from D Richardson & Co, Bracken House as the 932kg of meat left with a price tag of £2134, a trio of magical homebred Limousin’s from A C Simpson & Son, McNeil Farm chased the leader all the way as they all joined the £2000 plus club. A harder day for the purveyors of Black and White bulls however the familiar names of R Hall & Son and J M & S Walton, not for the first time battled it out for the leading places.

Clean Cattle (139) – As Isaac Newton suggested, what goes up must come down and sadly he was right; the beef bubble has developed a slow puncture during the past seven days, a heifer average of 242ppk isn’t actually disastrous but given the stratospheric levels witnessed lately the pill seems that little harder to swallow. A wonderful Limousin heifer from regular supporters J V & J A Hodgson, Summerhouse will soon hang proudly in the shop of H Taylor & Sons, Darlington as she rightly topped the trade at 286 pence per kilo. Top grossed valued heifer came from F & R Simpson of Square House, Quebec as their super pen peaked at £1770. The uber consistent Renton’s of Morpeth rounded off a good day topping the steers per kilo with a smart 587kg Limousin selling for 275 pence whilst the big lads as usual from Barker Farming Partnership, Scorton were again breaking the £2000 barrier to a top of £2107.

Prime Lambs (2242) – Plenty of numbers forward, varied quality offered met another remarkable trade with a sale average of 238 pence per kilo and £103.48. The better bred and better fed were extremely easy to sell, the top prices were naturally dominated by the already mentioned and truly fabulous young handlers who put on an absolutely superb show.
