Show Cattle – A wonderful show of Limousin sired cattle were on display in front of our expert judge Paul Taylor-Garthwaite representing long standing DFAM customers H Taylor & Sons, Darlington as we gladly hosted another successful event in partnership with our friends at the North East Limousin Breeders Club. For the second year running at this event, it was supreme championship success for Jim & Heather Marks of Gilly Flatts Farm, Bishopton with this year’s choice proving to be a majestic dark red steer sired by the highly regarded good getter Lodge Hamlet. Reserve Championship today went to Michael Robinson of East Alwent Farm, Staindrop with a very shapely heifer which was originally purchased here in Darlington as a store from D & M Lowes, Barningham. Top of the placings in the bull class was a jet-black muscle machine from J B Luck, Milestone House, Bowes as he fought off some super strong competition, all three class winners at this show certainly carried influence of the British Blue on their maternal sides which seemingly created the perfect potion for our judges eye today when mixed with the Limousin bull.

Prime Bulls (68) – No doubting it is harder work at the moment, the bull beef trade isn’t what it was and a desperate shortage of staff in the boning and butchery plants seems to be largely responsible. This week the sale averaged 224ppk and £1519. Top price per kilo went to our 1st placed bull from J B Luck, Bowes when he reached 271ppk; closest challenger falling short by a single penny came from W E Swales & Sons, Thirsk as remarkably the top 21 bulls per kilo were all Limousin’s today. Two absolute tanks from Rochester & Murray, West Butsfield led the gross values with the biggest weighing in at 1005kg reaching £2351 on a day which saw half a dozen sell over £2000, in a bull ring dominated by one breed it was a pair of mighty Charolias from Malton’s M & J Hayhurst which showed the greatest resistance against the otherwise domination by the Limousin’s. Black and white bulls continue to sell well and have suffered very little compared to the best end, leading this week was the expert feeding of R Hall & Son, Brotton at 215ppk and £1352. Below as always are some of the days most successful sellers.

J B Luck, Bowes sold 2 Bulls to average 268ppk and £2115

Clean Cattle (138) – As is the case nationally the buyers are showing slight resistance, a somewhat unpredictable day with good returns for the best cattle yet less life in the buyers of R and O grades, all said and done this left our heifers averaging 264ppk, steers 236ppk with the whole show average £1477. Just five heifers this week broke the 300 pence barrier as W & M Knaggs & Son, Sadberge and near neighbours J L Marks, Bishopton joined a pair from Ponteland’s P J & M P Gilhespy, the winner however came from the familiar expert feeding of J V & J A Hodgson, The Grange, Summerhouse when they sold a cracking Limousin for 308 pence per kilo. Top steer per kilo was the Limousin show champion from J L Marks with the next best at 283ppk coming from B Walker, Dalton-on-Tees. Leading the gross values were two bulky British Blue bullocks, the successful vendors were W J Scott Ltd, West Woodburn reaching £1966 however just pipping them at the post selling to £1973 were J E Suddes & Son, Cornsay Colliery. Top gross valued heifer was another feather in the cap for the excellent breeding of Jim and Heather Marks as they produced an excellent 647kg Limousin which sold for £1915, a second silver medal followed for W J Scott Ltd whilst both the aforementioned Suddes and Hodgson pens also sold heifers beyond £1800. As is customary some of the top consignors are listed below.

Prime Lambs (396) – Numbers increasing, that’s to be expected at this time of year and more so following last week’s fabulous trade here in DFAM compared to other outlets, so whilst easier this week still good as the weighed straight sale averaged 321ppk and £132.70. First sell of the season came today for the often-prolific J C Simpson, Hill Top East, Caldwell who duly produced some peaches to top the sale with 40kg lambs selling for 400ppk and the same run finding 50kg lambs which sold for £166. Last weeks star performers W & M Knaggs & Son, Sadberge chased the Simpson consignment all the way as a show with an exceptional top end yet containing all shapes and sizes farther down the ranks found homes with absolute ease throughout.

Prime Hoggs (367) – Still the hoggs are appearing as they always do through May; for the top price per kilo, we simply copy and paste T N Callender, Ox Eye Farm in to this space as they continue to turn out unbeatable Beltex hoggs, this week they sold a trio to 329ppk. A top gross value this week of £150 went to B & S M Rutherford, Old Cassop with a hefty Charollais tup hogg, behind this the better fed and better bred hoggs regularly sold £130 to £145.

Cast Ewes & Rams (195) – The ewe trade continues in fine form as a light show kept the buyers hungry and maintained the £100 plus average, in reality big numbers are now not expected at this time of year and with Eid al-Adha falling in early July the signs are promising for the marvellous mutton run to continue. Topping the sale at £220 were two vendors as a shapely ewe from William Tindale, Paradise Farm had her price matched by a Beltex ram from W & M Knaggs & Son, East Newbiggin. Big Mule ewes sold to £124 with plenty well beyond £100 whilst the pick of the horned ewes reached £80.
