Cast Cattle – A very light show averaged a splendid 147 pence per kilo and £1015 with venders again seeming delighted with their returns. Top price per kilo and leading gross valued female today was a very smart Limousin OTM from A P Greenshields of Stoneygate Farm, Tyne and Wear; the 38 month old reached 198ppk and £1451. Leading the Friesian trade was a wonderful youngster from Stainton Hill Farms at an amazing 174ppk whilst a fleshy 4 year old from A Willey of Chopwell added up nicely at £1048. As usual the native breeds were well represented as a nice Shorthorn from A Ingleson of Chop Gate led the way at 170ppk and a heavyweight Hereford from W & R Kemp, St Helens Auckland amassed a mighty value of £1380. Bull beef is certainly well and truly on the menu for the buyers, a 1014kg Limousin from G Swinbank & Sons, Breckon Hill reached 168ppk and a mighty £1703 whilst a top trio of over thirty month Friesian bulls from W Walker & Sons, Newton Aycliffe all sold between 184 and 190ppk.

Store Cattle – Absolutely stratospheric, a trade which arguably (somehow) betters the amazing returns witnessed over the past few weeks, the beautiful beef trade is booming and the benefits of a live auction are possibly at an all-time high, those who sell from home look brave at the moment as some cattle are making £100’s beyond expectations. Twice this week bidding surpassed £1500, a further 8 sold over £1400 with buyers in top gear, once again both heifers and steers averaged well over £1000 with a host of younger grazing cattle included in that statistic. Credit today goes to a pair of good feeders who both enjoyed great success on their journey down the A68 this morning, a huge 2 year old Aberdeen Angus steer from G & J H Tomlinson & Son of Sunniside Farm, Knitsley sold for a terrific £1530 whilst a meaty Charolais of the same age from J H Johnson, White Lea Farm, Roddymoor checked in just £10 behind. A superb trio from Sunniside averaged £1450 whilst 8 from White Lea included the days top priced heifer at £1400 and levelled up at £1440. Once again the buyers were out in force seeking grass beast, plenty of yearling’s are selling above £1000 with the sharper sorts often the top side of £1100, leading the young bulls was a tremendous 19 month old Limousin from M Madrell, Whorlton at £1255 whilst a sensational packet of 12 month old bulls from Fristling Hall Farm, Essex also sold a quintet beyond £1200.

Store & Breeding Sheep – The sheep trade continues its soaring flight, little sweat could be seen coming from the auctioneer today, when demand is this high the bids are more than plentiful. Top of the store hoggs today was a fabulous quintet of Texel’s from D F & M Littlefair of Staindrop at a tremendous £137.50, the sweepings up are certainly mixed through them now as the store hogg season comes towards its natural end yet the whole show averaged a bewildering £97. The gimmer hoggs followed and averaged an impressive £130, the pick of them turned out to be a shapely pair of Blue Texels from James Bailey of Ivanhoe Livestock reaching £150 apiece for the Bedale based firm. Over to Ivanhoe again for our first real gauge of the ewe and lamb trade for 2021, a splendid offering of 51 continental ewes with 70 lambs by their side met a furious trade, a healthy flock average over £90 per life peaked at £240 for a pen of 10 suckling 18 whilst some smart ewes suckling singles sold beyond £100 per life. The expertly presented ewes were mostly 3-5 crop and largely full mouthed however almost a third of them were missing a tooth or two, the ease of sale was in no small part thanks to the quality of sire they had clearly seen, some exceptionally smart Beltex and Blue Texel lambs accompanied them to the ring.
