Darlington Farmers Auction Mart held their weekly sale of Prime Stock on Thursday 4th March 2021. Forward were 298 Cattle, 932 Sheep and 7 Pigs.

Prime Bulls (106) – A truly astonishing trade from start to finish, the average for all sold was a massive 220 pence per kilo and £1443 per head. A memorable day when incredibly 16 bulls sold beyond £1800 and 15 checked in at 250 pence or more. Top of the shop a stunning 679kg British Blue from AS & SM Kemp of Whitwell Farm which reached a tremendous 270 pence per kilo, the terrific sort was purchased by the Kemp’s from the Tindale family of Shadforth at our opening store cattle sale here back in September. Two dozen impeccably finished bull’s from Whitwell Farm also took the accolade of producing the days top native breed, a lump of a Beef Shorthorn which sold for 234ppk and £1779. The top gross value for the 3rd consecutive week was nicely over £2000, a pure Limousin this week from American Squeeze Crush of Oak Tree Farm topped the sale at an impressive £2044. The dairy bulls took another lift, several the top side of 200 pence including a beauty from R Ormston of Patrick Brompton at 209ppk, leading the dairy breed gross values is becoming a habit for G W Dobson & Son of Wingate as they this week peaked at £1324 as the 28 Holstein Friesians averaged an impressive 186ppk. Clean Cattle (184) – The beef trade booms, ferocious bidding and a frenzied trade from start to finish, the heifers average very close to 240 pence per kilo with a host of native and dairy breeds included. The butchers shop heifers easily 260 plus with a scattering over 270, a pair over 280 and a solitary Limousin today finding her way al the way up the ladder to a wonderful 290 pence per kilo. The delighted vendor of the high priced heifer was I W Cairns of Pesspool Hall, Haswell with a sweet 511kg Limousin; the majority of the other vendors today also had cause for celebration as a fine trade was apparent throughout, over then to the incredibly consistent J V & J A Hodgson of The Grange, Summerhouse as they turned out the top grossing heifer (Limousin) at £1671, see as usual some of the top averages below containing yet another week of Hodgson heroics. A first draw for J R Raine & Sons of Brussleton Farm produced the leading gross value as the pick of their steers, a hefty Charolais, added up nicely to £1760, top steer per kilo headed back across the Pennines to Egremont with J J Crichton of Loughrigg Farm as his smart Limousin sold for 259 pence per kilo.

OTM (8) – As always when the trade is flying the wholesalers let age be no handicap, some staggering returns are available for the older cattle. Top today a wonderful 245 pence per kilo for a 41 month old Limousin heifer from J H & M & N W Brown of Middleton St George whilst a superb 3 year old British Blue heifer down from Heddon on the Wall and the good home of M & J Cheesbrough & Sons rang the bell when she returned a value of £1593.

Prime Hoggs (784) – The hogg buyers trudge mercilessly in to battle as March arrives, a month when traditionally the sheep trade can fly we certainly hit the ground running today. Few nowadays feed them like A C Simpson & Son, McNeil Farm, Witton-le-Wear and their heavyweight hoggs sold at extraordinary levels, a top price of £189.50 with the run off 77 averaging a perhaps unprecedented 61.77kg 274.55ppk and £169.58. Todays sale averaged a wonderful 287ppk with an SQQ of 292ppk and an amazing average per head of £132.36, the leading price per kilo was awarded to J E Braithwaite & Son of Prys House with smart Beltex at at 341 pence; away from the regular mart topping breeds a wonderfully fed run of Scotch Blackface hoggs from L W Martin of Commondale saw the 45 of them average a terrific 283ppk and £131.90.

Cast Ewes (148) – Numbers very low and a sharper trade as a result, a nice show of quality averaged a credible £92 to a top of £135 from T H Richardson & Sons, Low Moor Hill. Mule ewes peaked at £116 from J R Raine & Sons, Brussleton, many more ewes are required weekly to fulfil demand.
