Darlington Farmers Auction Mart held their annual show and sale of pedigree Limousin cattle for the North East Limousin Breeders Club on Saturday 20th May 2023. On conclusion of the Limousin sale a sale of commercial breeding cows, heifers and calves was held. Forward were 63 head.

Thanks go to Ben Maskell of Whinfell Park for undertaking the duties as our judge this morning, a good quality show was presented. Champion on the day went to Thorninghurst Tomahawk from Mr S Gilleard of Thorne, Doncaster. Tomahawk is a January 2022 born son of Glenrock Nemo out of a Lowgate cow with influential Sportsmans, Glenrock and Ampertaine bloodlines just a generation further back. The reserve Championship went to last year’s winners Mr D W & Mr M Jordon of Longhirst, Morpeth, Northumberland with their bull Longhirst Topgun; another January 2022 born bull this one is a son of Maraiscote Odante out of homebred Longhirst Petra and boasts a long line of easy calving French blood down his maternal side. Sale of Pedigree Cattle
A good crowd assembled, buyers from far and wide ensured an excellent clearance rate for the pedigrees of 77%. Top price of 6500 Guineas went to the first bull in the ring Cornsay Salty from W I Suddes & Sons when he sold to Taylor Brothers of Belle Isle, Richmond. Salty is sired by Scorboro Marabou with a long homebred line on the mother’s side with two copies of the F94L gene assisting his excellent figures. Four other bulls sold to at least 4000 guineas including the reserve champion from Longhirst (4800g) plus two more from Cornsay, one bull from first time vendors J & P Armstrong (Deneway Herd) and a remarkable youngster just 12 months of age with a big future ahead of him Swale Titanic. Pedigree females were in much demand as the six young heifers averaged a pleasing 1783 Guineas, top price of 1950 Guines went to the in form Suddes family again with their February 2022 born Cornsay Tizzy, another Scorboro Marabou offspring doing the business for Cornsay.

Commercial Cattle
A great trade for some genuine hard working commercial cattle with a marvellous ringside of buyers in attendance looking to fill their fast-growing grass fields. Top price of the day at £2520 went to a 4-year-old dairy crossed British Blue cow with a beautiful blue roan 1 month old heifer calf at foot from the herd reduction of W B Rutter & Sons, Greengill Farm, Scargill which sold to Josh Burton, Ettersgill. Another Greengill goddess of a similar description sold for the next best price of £2480 ahead of a trio of exceptional Montbeliarde crossed Limousin heifers with calves from Les Dent, Brough which each sold for £2400. Best of the bulling heifers was a superb 17-month-old Limousin crossed British Blue from S & J Dent & Son, Great Burdon Farm, Darlington with the same good home also selling in calf cows to a top of £1820.
