Darlington Farmers Auction Mart held their weekly sale of cast cattle, store and breeding stock on Monday 22nd May 2023. Forward were 319 Cattle and 487 Sheep.

Cast Cattle – The cow trade steamrollers its way through another week with absolutely no signs of the brakes coming on, another superb sale averaged over 200 pence per kilo and a brilliant £1336 per head. Top price per kilo at a wonderful 272 pence was a cracking 40-month-old Limousin from W & M Knaggs & Son, Sadberge; behind the Sadberge superstar F Ward of Frosterley sold a British Blue OTM at 262ppk and Skelton Farming produced a Stabiliser OTM at 256ppk. Top priced older cow per kilo came from B R Lawson, Whashton at 250ppk with next up a superb 9-year-old Limousin from W A Wardman Ltd, Yearby selling for 248ppk and also the days top gross value for a cow of a wonderful £2100. The Wardman pen were flying again with the days top gross valued native bred cow when an Aberdeen Angus sold for £1780 whilst the top native per kilo went to a fleshy Longhorn OTM from Raby Home Farm which sold for 228 pence per kilo. Pick of this week’s cows retiring from the milking parlour came from R & W Todd, Toft Hill when they sold a superb Friesian for 212ppk and £1416 whilst an impressive Ayrshire OTM from D K Barker, Coatham Munderville also deserves mention selling for 222ppk and £1809. Finally, to the stock bulls and trade once again proved excellent, F Ward of Frosterley led the way with a 5-year-old Limousin selling for 238ppk and £2653 with the next best a thumping 9-year-old Simmental from G H Farms Ltd selling for 216ppk and £2406.

Store & Breeding Cattle – The hunger for feeding beast continues as all classes remain very easy to sell. British Blonde’s dominated the young bull trade as four yearlings sold over £1400, the pick of them a great sort from J J Horn, Marske sold for £1450. A very sweet 15-month-old Simmental heifer was today’s top priced store when the classy lassie from J M Greensit & Son, Hackforth reached £1480; another of the same description tied for second place at £1440 with a shapely Limousin from G C & K J White & Son, Lunedale. Top of the steers at £1430 was a shapely 19-month-old Limousin from G T & M A Wearmouth, South Stainmore with a brilliant pair of Beef Shorthorns at just 11 and 12 months old from J & E M Lawson, Morden following close behind at £1420.

Store & Breeding Sheep – The feeding sheep look to be finally drying up, a varied offering saw store hoggs top at £90 from Ainsty Farms, York and feeding ewes a credible £104 for a pen of nine Mules from C H & M C Phalp, Great Ayton. Ewe and lamb trade remained solid; lowland bred hoggs with lambs also easy to sell however Mule hoggs with lambs easier on the week. A top price of £275 went to A Graham of Low Etherley with a cracking Texel ewe with a smart pair of lambs at foot, the same good home sold a ewe with a thumping single lamb for £255. Top of the hoggs were a sweet pen of ten Suffolk’s out of Mule’s with Beltex/Texel single lambs at foot from Gordon (and Julie despite her insistence that she’s not responsible for the sheep) Sedgewick, Ricknall Grange selling for a pleasing £250 per family; ten terrific Texel’s from Frank Johnson, West Shipley with smart Blue Texel singles sold well at £245 and the top pen of Mule hoggs with single lambs came from D H Dick & Sons, Great Fencote at £212.
