Darlington Farmers Auction Mart held a one-off sale of prime and cast sheep on Monday 30th May 2022. Forward were 1205 Sheep.

678 New Season Lambs sold to 406ppk or £179
314 Prime Hoggs sold to 316ppk or £190
213 Cast ewes & Rams sold to £230

New Season Lambs (678) – As is often the case the month of May ends with a fantastic spring lamb trade, a fabulous weighed straight sale average today of 338 pence per kilo and more importantly £143.69 per head. A hard-fought battle this week for the top spots with some superb lambs competing, out on top at 406 pence came Caldwell based J C Simpson with a fantastic trio of 42kg lambs selling to Roots Farm Shop, East Rounton; a whisker off the pace were W & M Knaggs & Son, Sadberge at 404 pence per kilo with a quality quartet also weighing 42kg. Top gross value at £179 went to four pure Texel lambs from Dromonby Bridge Farm, Kirby in Cleveland which weighed in at 53kg, in hot pursuit were Cole Hill Farm Ltd, Elwick with a dozen super heavies at 58kg reaching £175.50 apiece. A hot trade indeed on this short week with close to 200 lambs selling for at least £150.

Prime Hoggs (314) – Still the hogg prices stay firm, as can be expected now the hogg shopping experience is a varied one, the good sheep remain very easy to sell. Top price per kilo went to five fabulous Beltex hoggs from R E & L Frank, Carlton-in-Cleveland which weighed 48kg and sold for £152 (316 pence); top gross value was a bulky 84kg Texel from E Moralee, Langley Park which sold for a superb £190.

Cast Ewes & Rams (213) – Still the mutton remains a fast trade, the ewes again average nicely over £100. Top price today was a super pair of Texel ewes from Cole Hill Farm Ltd when they sold for £230, some day for the Elwick based firm and credit where credit is due as the trailer carried 31 ewes which averaged £172 shortly after their 33 lambs had levelled at £169. Mule ewes sold to a top of £130 whilst fit horned ewes traded between £60 and £90. Top of the tups was £170 from W K M M Lamb, Cotherstone.
