Darlington Auction Mart held its first Easter Show & Sale of Prime Cattle at the new auction mart. A fabulous show of quality cattle from as far North as Fife & as far wide as Ainstable, Carlisle were presented to The Judge for his consideration – Darlington born Paul Garthwaite of the well renowned ‘Taylors Butchers’ to cast his expert eye over, after much deliberation the Champion rosette was awarded to a British Blue Heifer weighing 555k and shown by local farmer Wayne Armstrong of Coxhoe, she went on to top the sale at 340ppk & £1887 and was purchased by the judge on behalf of ‘Taylors Butchers’. The Reserve Champion clean beast was a Lightweight British Blue Steer consigned by Cheesbrough & Son Ltd, Buildings Farm Ryton which sold to Wooley Bros, Sheffield for 255ppk, realising £1354. The Bull section would be just as difficult a task to judge as the clean cattle, with a wonderful run forward. The Champion on the day was a Homebred British Blue that travelled across country from Ainstable Hall, Carlisle courtesy of TN&J Hall just 1 in a run of 15 fantastic bulls forward by this vendor. Clean Cattle trade overall was slightly easier although taking the overage cattle out of the equation an overall average of 207.38ppk for steers & 235.34ppk for heifers was achieved. Continental Bulls, as with the clean not just as dear, but the Black & Whites and Native Breeds which made up a third of the sale were much dearer on the week.

All at Darlington Mart would like to express our thanks to Paul Garthwaite and to all the vendors that took the time and trouble to ensure a show of cattle second to none.
