Prime Lambs (1694) – A two tier show, well fleshed lambs very easily sold however lean meat is nobody’s treat and the bottom end now either require hard feed or selling as stores. The weighed straight sale average of 238ppk and £106.89 is identical to the corresponding week last year however an ordinary bottom end today would suggest we may still be ahead. Top this week at 325 pence per kilo was an excellent 44kg Beltex crossed lamb from W K M M Lamb, Doe Park, Cotherstone which sold for £143. Behind the lamb from Lamb came a flurry of superb pens from Messrs Askwith, Crook and it was they who led the gross values at £152. Stacks of sheep sold in the £120 to £130 bracket today, all of which were fed and finished well, the lean lambs stand out like a sore thumb as we head into Autumn.

Cast Ewes & Rams (397) – Ewe trade harder work, as with the lambs the lean meat is especially difficult to rehome. Top went to a bulky pure Texel from T H Richardson & Son, Low Moor Hill at £175, Mule ewes need to be massive to make it beyond £90 and the horned sheep needed to be very fit to break £40.

Prime Pigs (16) – The great DfAM pig giveaway continued, the correct term to describe this is sadly not available in print; the pigs were neither missed away, kissed away, or dissed away but I am sure it should sound something like that. If you pop round to our pig auctioneers with some apple sauce this weekend, he will most likely have a leg of pork in the oven.
