Prime Bulls (110) – A nice show of well finished bulls forward met an improved trade averaging 226ppk which again puts Darlington right at the top of the tree. Two bulls sold over £2000, three more beyond £1900 and five in the £1800’s was a very pleasing return; despite valiant charges from regular supporters D Richardson & Co, Melsonby and J W Holmes & Son, Nottingham plus a handsome Charolais from Dromanby Bridge Farm none could catch the Kemp family of Whitwell Farm, Sherburn as their exceptional 829kg Limousin added up to the days best of £2122 and 256ppk. A beautiful British Blue all the way from Grantham and the good yard of M D Copley, Tippings Lodge matched the 256ppk of the Whitwell wizards whilst a further 10 sold at 250ppk and beyond, of the top performers some terrific runs from A G Watson & Sons, Rushyford and another good Grantham based feeder J B Thompson, Stainby House were certainly a pleasure to see in the ring. Further credit goes to the Kemp’s today as they led the trade for Friesian bulls at a massive £1612 whilst the top black and white per kilo went to the familiar faces of R Hall & Son, Brotton. Not so many native breeds to report on this week however aside from the mainstream continental breeds some exceptional returns were certainly achieved, impressing were Stabiliser bulls from across the Pennines and J A & R Geldard & Sons, Kendal reaching tops of 214ppk and £1583.

M D Copley, Grantham sold 7 Bulls to average 246ppk and £1556

Clean Cattle (145) – A touch easier, thus said the heifer average of 255 pence per kilo remains exceptional and way out ahead of the other options available to our feeding fraternity. Seven heifers today broke the 280 pence barrier with a staggering 30 others 270ppk to 279ppk; top of the pack at 283 pence per kilo was a superb 606kg Limousin from W A Armstrong, Coxhoe with the chasing half dozen hailing from five different homes it was a genuinely close race this week. Top grossed value heifer, not for the first time, went to the ultra-consistent J V & J A Hodgson of Summerhouse as they turned out a lovely 681kg Limousin which realised £1736. On to the steers and more success for the Coxhoe based feeder as twice the Armstrong pen climbed as high as 266 pence, no doubt for the umpteenth week running about our top gross valued steer as the big lads from Barker Farming Partnership, Scorton again broke their way through the £2000 barrier. Some super feeding was undoubtedly displayed today and some handsome returns are listed below for the top performers, special mention goes to the Hirst’s of Neasham who turned out 19 great heifers this week and quite rightly comfortably made the honours board below.

New Season Lambs (1865) – A marvellous day again with the sheep shed bustling, the sale average of 265ppk and over £108 sees the lambs up some £7-£8 apiece on the week and more importantly the strong trade of 2021 has clearly refused to die down or go away without a fight, this week’s sale average is some 43 pence higher than that seen one year ago. With some 18 pens of sheep selling over 300 pence per kilo the top slot by a whisker went to P Tindale, Paradise Farm, Shadforth at 332 pence. Less doubt about the top gross value as regular supporters M & A Gaskin of Holdsworth Farm, Eggleston led the way with a huge lamb reaching £147, the better bred and better fed lambs this week sold between £125 and £135 with great regularity, only a high proportion of pet lambs perhaps pulled the average below £110 per head as buyers noticeably pushed on.
