Prime Bulls (104) – A marginally easier trade however a host of dairy breeds naturally lessened the average, the sale averaged a very healthy 204ppk with the better fed and better bred still returning some very handsome prices. Clean Cattle (188) – Last weeks high flying trade was always going to be hard to follow, the vendors put forward a good show and the buyers certainly tried their best as returns were slightly less for some but by no means unsatisfactory. The top prices were shared across the nation today, leading the heifers at 278 pence per kilo were two vendors, despite the 171 miles between Beeswax Farming from Nocton in Lincolnshire and M F Hall, Ponteland the buyers seemingly couldn’t separate the two of them and they each took a share of the top slot. Top priced steer per kilo was a very similar story, the top of 250 pence was shared between A Hall & Son, Barker House, Hexham and S & A May, Sheltwood Farm, Bromsgrove; this pairing left home bound for Darlington some 237 miles from each other. Leading the gross values today stretched the map again as the top steer, a tremendous British Blonde at £1593 from D Robson, Merryshields Farm, Capheaton departed some 330 miles from the leading gross heifer a huge Charolais from first time vendors J E & B E Kimber, Beanhill Farm, Chippenham. All roads then today led to Darlington, countless cattle at 250-270 pence as the beef trade continues to defy the gloomy post Brexit predictions made by some; some impressive averages this week topped by regular supporter Brian Walker of Dalton-on Tees with a terrific trio, once again chasing hard was another regular P J & E S Rogerson who is so often here flying the Cumbrian flag.

B Walker, Dalton-on-Tees sold 3 Heifers to average 267ppk and £1572

P J & E S Rogerson, Great Asby sold 3 Heifers to average 265ppk and £1401

S & A May, Bromsgrove sold 10 Cattle (9h, 1s) to average 259ppk & £1444

Beeswax Dyson Farming, Nocton sold 12 Cattle (10h, 2s) to average 258ppk & £1324

F & J S Gargett, Barnard Castle sold 4 Heifers to average 256ppk & £1428

W J Scott Ltd, West Woodburn sold 10 Steers to average 226ppk & £1512

Prime Hoggs (1055) –  The sheep trade remains in top form, todays average of 255 pence per kilo with an SQQ of 269 pence again left vendors delighted, a complete mixture of hoggs included the good, the bad and the ugly however all classes found a home with ease. For the third week running the Whitfield family of High Castledene, Knitsley topped the pence per kilo, this week’s leader a terrific little Beltex at 40kg and £128, 320 pence as the trailer load levelled at 276ppk and £124. Top gross value this week could not quite be managed by the Whitfield’s as their crown was stolen by the heavyweights of A C Simpson & Son, McNeil Farm, Witton-le-Wear which barged their way in to the top slot, the pick of them a 60kg trio of Texels at an impressive £148 as 40 from this home averaged 61kg and £136.
