Cast Cattle – Another unbelievable trade as the cow trade flies high, a mesmerising sale average of 159 pence per kilo and £1084 was immensely impressive given of the 110 over the scale included 31 native breeds and 25 Holstein Friesians. A memorable day for the Limousin’s of A C Simpson & Son, McNeil Farm as they led the pence per kilo at a whopping 236 with a 39 month old and the goss values at £1811 for a terrific 10 year old; the McNeil trio today averaged an unbelievable 221ppk and £1738. Top priced native breeds today were both Aberdeen Angus as G & J H Tomlinson & Son of Knitsley reached 198ppk with a 34 month old and £1476 was achieved by a 7 year old out of the same good pen; 187ppk and £1369 were the averages for the trio of Angus from the Tomlinson’s. The dairy cow trade was also in big tune with tops of £1419 for a Monbelliarde from J E Holliday & Son, Witton Park and 186ppk for a Holstein Friesian from W E & C A Anderson, Caldwell. Once again the bull trade is buoyant, top of the pile today a miraculous 13 year old Blonde D’Aquitaine from J C & P Tallentire, Richmond at an impressive 184ppk and £1805.

Store Cattle – Even yesterday’s Olympic closing ceremony had nothing on the bright lights and furious bidding witnessed today in the store cattle ring, a genuinely outstanding trade throughout. Twice good bullocks from D W Dresser, Greatham sold for £1490 would certainly have proved worthy winners if it was not for a brilliant 2 year old Limousin from Laing Brothers, Coxhoe at a massive £1580. The heifers were also in high demand as a 17 month old Limousin from C T Gibson, Houghton Bank (£1380) just edged out a 15 month old of the same breed from W A Dinsdale & Son, Grinton (£1375). The young bulls also proved very easy to sell, rounding off a marvellous day for the Limousin breed were A & D Proctor of Swarland Old Hall with an exceptional 10 month old which sold for a breath-taking £1510.

Store & Breeding Sheep – The shearling ewes looked strong this week and as a result sold well, three pens of Texel’s bred out of Cheviot Mule ewes from Thornton Park, Thirsk led the way selling at £190 and beyond; they were closely followed by a run of sharp Suffolks from S G Harrison & Son, Setterington. The store lambs averaged the same as last week however a lesser quality show suggested to many a faster trade on the day. Leading the way were brilliant Texel’s from G H Lister, Wolsingham which twice sold over £100, strong lambs in general sold £85-£95 with the medium-term keepers £75-£85 and only the long keep types were within sight of £70. Vendors are comfortably up £8-10 on the same week last year.

Evening Sheep – A light show of lambs averaged over £100 with the pence per kilo levelling up at 226. Top of the sale was a straight battle between two familiar faces to Darlington; remarkably both good homes are also caravan park proprietors, top per kilo were a lovely trio from I M Maughan, New Hall Farm selling for 260 pence whilst the leading gross valued lambs went to W K M M Lamb, Doe Park at £125. The Doe Park run averaged nicely at £118 and 244ppk. Almost all of the ewes forward were hill sheep with only a scattering of lowland breeds, the top went to D Alderson, Newgate with a Blue Faced Leicester ewe selling for £118, Mule ewes sold to £100, Hill Cheviots to £89 and Swaledale’s to £79.
