The risk this afternoon on one of the nation’s busiest sheep weeks was always an oversupply but pleasingly our faithful butchers and wholesalers bid freely throughout proceedings. With two and a half thousand to choose from it was somewhat unusual for one pen to stand out as they did however five extraordinary Texel lambs from Catterick’s David and Davina Lovegreen won by a furlong, weighing 46kg the superstars sold for a DFAM seasons best of £202 and 439 pence to Yorkshire Halal Meats, Keighley.

Cast Ewes & Rams (346) – With a brilliant trade for months now the real danger is that we have reached the summit, the number of ewes and rams are still flooding through the doors of Darlington Mart and whilst trade appears positive (the ewe average increasing this week by £18 and rams by £15) today will be the last help we receive from the Qurbani festival which occurs this weekend, we hope to have some happy customers on today’s trade but we watch carefully now with baited breath over the coming weeks and months. Texel tups from G Sedgewick of Ricknall Grange led the way today selling three times to £180. Good continental ewes sold typically £130 to £150 with the heaviest Mule’s £110 to £125.
