Darlington Farmers Auction Mart held their weekly sale of Cast Cattle, Store Stock and Prime Sheep and Cast Ewes on Monday 11th January 2021. Forward were 234 cattle and 1467 sheep.

Cast Cattle – A simply sublime show of cows certainly galvanised the buyers into top gear and the resulting trade was simply astonishing,. Many worthy of a mention this week as twice we exceeded £1600, a further four over £1500 and another magnificent seven beyond £1400. A quartet over 200 pence per kilo were chased hard by a further terrific ten over 180 pence per kilo as the wonderful display saw the whole show average a mind blowing 145 pence per kilo and an unprecedented £999.63 per head. Leading the pence per kilo at 222 (£1447) was a wonderful 35 month old 652kg British Blue from S & R E Williamson of Littleburn Farm, Hamsterley; amazingly nine cows grossed more money in the bank than the Littleburn superstar with the top spot going to J Watson & Co of Bowsden Moor with a perfectly finished  842kg Charolais selling for £1684 (200ppk). Pick of the native breeds today a smart 5 year old Aberdeen Angus from A & A G Moralee, Willington and a hefty South Devon from N Aungier, Witham realising £1334. Dairy cows this week peaked at £1162 and 162ppk from J T Forster & Son, Killerby.

Store Cattle – The remarkable beef trade continues as the store cattle were an absolute flyer today, no place for the faint hearted trying to buy as all classes are very much in demand. Top of the pile today a strong 21 month old Limousin steer from J H Johnson, White Lea Farm, Roddymoor sold for £1200 as the White Lea consignment amazingly secured 16 of the top 21 steer prices. Leading the heifers today a fine example of an Aberdeen Angus from J C Thwaite & Son, Cragg Hill Farm, Lartington; the 14 month old saw the hammer fall at £1170. Young bulls peaked this week twice at £1095 from regular supporters B A & C Pearson of Stainsby Hill Farm, Thornaby; the bull trade is booming as the finishers are certainly having a good crack of the whip at the far end of the food chain.

Store Hoggs – The sheep trade juggernaut ploughs its way forward with another sensational trade, amazing scenes again with bidding surpassing £100 on 30 occasions and a sale average of £94, absolutely incredible. Top of the pile this week was Andrew Wilson of Calf Close Farm, Easington with a trio of brilliant Beltex selling for a wonderful £127.50, the same good home also led the trade for Mule’s selling beyond £100. Plenty of store hogg vendors are coming to the end now and as they will shortly turn their attention to the next crop they are certainly ending this seasons production with a very sweet taste in their mouths.

Prime Sheep – There are no January blues for the vendors and certainly no reduced price January sales for the buyers, the live ring continues on it’s crusade to lift the trade nationally, the deadweight outlets (as always on a rising trade) have once again been weighed, measured and found wanting. The hoggs tonight averaged a wonderful 255 pence per kilo and £114.19 with an SQQ average of 263ppk. Top price tonight went to long standing customer J G Walton & Son, Rockcliffe Farm with half a dozen 38kg Beltex selling for 301ppk and £114.50. Leading the gross values were again DFAM regular customers I Marshall & Sons of Hope House Farm reaching an impressive £127.50.
