Cast Cattle & OTM – Again the cow trade holds firm, the red meat trade is so far proving the post Brexit doom prophets totally wrong, the EU was certainly well represented as cows with German, French and Irish passports all contributed to todays 130 pence per kilo average. Unusually today the report will begin with the stock bulls, three brilliant specimens today sold beyond £1700 and are all truly worthy of mention; a fleshy 1154kg 11 year old Limousin from J Layfield, Nackshivan Farm, Willington sold for £1731 whilst a Charolais OTM from J B Thompson, Plum Tree Farm, Glaisdale sold for 182ppk and £1741 however top of the pile was the pride and joy of J & A Moralee, Hardriding Farm, Bardon Mill. A sensational 1243kg Belgian Blue at the ripe old age of 13 was amazingly bought by the Moralee’s back in October 2011 at the dispersal sale of R.L. Ramshaw, Guisborough which was conducted by our late colleague Stephen Aitken, today after a fruitful career at Hardriding he sold for £1765, more than half of his purchase price almost 10 years ago. Top priced cow per kilo a beautiful 5 year old British Blue from S & R E Williamson, Littleburn Farm, Hamsterley at 220ppk, she amassed a gross value of £1474 and was only headed by one other cow a 5 year old Limousin from J R & M Richardson, Etherley House, Winston sold for a  wonderful £1540. Top priced dairy cow today £1062 and 146ppk from Little Newsham Farms whilst the Native charge was led by B H & S Hodgson, Nampara with Aberdeen Angus at 150ppk and £1353.

Store & Breeding Cattle – The best end of the store cattle were certainly in high demand, a lovely run of bulls from R A Patterson & Son, White House Farm, Capheaton thoroughly dominated their section as the homebred Limousin’s twice reached £1185 and the pen of 9 returned an average over £1100. A fast trade for the clean cattle, an absolutely outstanding run of forward Limousin stores from K & M M Henderson of West Witton Row Farm were the showstoppers, the 21-23 month old homebred superstars witnessed steers twice sell to £1485 and heifers to £1400, 9 from this home averaged a phenomenal £1355. As usual the native bred cattle were much sought after, a quality quartet of 21-24 month old Aberdeen Angus from G & J H Tomlinson & Son, Sunniside Farm averaged an impressive £1182. The yearling cattle are now rising by the week with a faint smell of Spring perhaps now drifting over the horizon, steers from Tarn Bros, Toft House Farm £1175 and T T Hall & Son, Church Farm £1135 perhaps the most impressive of the younger beast along with a smart heifer from R Peart, Mayland Hall at £1100.

Store Hoggs – Once again the store hogg trade was truly magnificent, an average just pennies away from £100 with some unbelievable returns. Take heed, before anyone dares to curse a troublesome Texel or a bothersome Beltex this coming lambing time they are at the moment, quite literally, little bars of gold. The top slot at a magnificent £144.50 went to W Ramsay & Son, Blakeley Hill Farm with a single Beltex, 17 from Blakeley Hill returned a fabulous average of £125.21. Chasing all the way were a fantastic run of Texels from I Spedding, Harelaw Farm as the 26 of them peaked at £138 and averaged even more than the Ramsay’s at  a magical £128.08. An absolute whirlwind trade for all weights, breeds and sizes; Mule’s peaked at £113.50 with Swaledale’s to a top of £63.50 as the store hogg buyers are in top gear with their foot hard to the floor.
