Store and Breeding Sheep – A new centre record was set today, a lap of honour then, and a feather in the cap for the Blue Texel breed, a superb unregistered 3 crop ewe with beautiful twin lambs at her side from J Woodward & Sons of Hall Farm, Heighington sold for an amazing £920, her flock mate had previously sold for £700 whilst a good day for the black sheep was rounded off by a Zwartbles 2 crop also with twins from Mrs Slee, Leyburn when she sold for £310. A wonderful show of hoggs were judged in the morning by Steven Kirby, Northallerton who carried out his duties impeccably. The master from Marwood himself Colin Gaskin swept the board with his excellent Texel crossed hoggs, they went on to top at £150 per life and average £138.50 per life, the Mule class proved harder to judge, certainly all classes of sheep were dearer today with grass seemingly now upon us. Great hoggs and lambs from first time vendors Messrs C B Parsons of Longtown sold well to average £107 per life whilst a nice run of dry Mule Ewe hoggs from Dromonby Bridge Farm averaged £137.44, the store hogg trade alas,  is all but done for another season.

Cast Cattle – Another fine cow trade, certainly something available for all budgets today as fabulous cattle were mixed with some slightly less desirables, non the less we have buyers for all classes and the sale average of 148ppk was certainly impressive given the mixture forward. Top per kilo was a smart Limousin OTM from J A & U M Fawcett of Manor House, Marske at 212 pence, she was joined over 200ppk by another Limousin OTM from S H Watson & Son, Winston and a brilliant 38 month old British Blonde from A R Keith, New Horton Grange, Seaton Burn. Top priced older cow both per kilo and gross value was a terrific 5 year old Limousin from Falshaw Partners, Shaws Farm, Ripon when she bent the needle past 1000kg and sold for 196ppk and £1973. Top of the native breeds this week were Fristling Hall Farm, Essex when they sold both Aberdeen Angus and Beef Shorthorns to 174ppk with a 10 year old South Devon our top gross native breed at £1270 from the same home. The milk price is seemingly improving, perhaps less temptation then to sell the parlour girls however those offered sold twice to 142ppk and a massive £1330 for a big girl from S H Watson & Son, Station Farm. Six bulls forward today; with three Holsteins and two Herefords to beat an absolutely phenomenal 10 year old Limousin from J & E M Lawson, Morden led the way selling for 188ppk and a whopping £2017.

Store Cattle – Perhaps a morsel of mercy for the buyers, cattle trade this week a shade easier, thus said over one third of the beast forward still sold beyond £1000 with £1100 to £1200 very common place indeed. Top price today went to a superb 16 month old Limousin steer from D W Dresser of Hall Farm, Greatham when he sold for £1285, just a whisker behind him were two absolutely beautiful 14 month old Limousin heifers from R White, Selgarth Farm, Middleton Tyas at £1280. Impressive yearling heifers from J R Fell, Croft Road sold as high as £1175 whilst the top native bred store beast was a strong two year old Hereford from G W & M Singleton & Sons, Farlington, he was chased hard for the top spot on the native podium by some strong Aberdeen Angus from T Sedgewick & Son, Morden. A lovely run of 101 cattle from Fristling Hall Farm, Essex sold well with their steers and young bulls peaking at £1100 with heifers from the Essex firm to a top of £1140. Best of the young bulls this week were a lovely trio of 11 month old Limousin’s from D Dixon, Rowley which sold for £1195.
